Public Invited to Free Fall Band Concert at Mary
BISMARCK, ND — Sunday, October 27, the University of Mary Concert Band will perform its annual Fall Band Concert at 3 p.m., in Founders Hall, at the Lumen Vitae University Center (LVUC), on campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
Dennis Gowen, professor of Music and director of Bands and High Brass at Mary, says the students are eagerly looking forward to their first major performance of the new academic year.
“We hosted a wonderful group of Canadian band students on our campus this September,” said Gowen, “and we gave them an early preview of our fall performance. The ensemble members and I are excited to share our entire program with our wonderful regional audience.”
The performance will open with “Magic Overture” by Thomas Doss. Second on the program will be the iconic “Second Suite in F for Military Band” by English composer Gustav Holst. “This is such a hallmark work for any concert band, and the students always fall in love with these English classics,” added Gowen.
Also slated for the performance is “Songs of Sailor and Sea” by Robert W. Smith, “Rush” by Samuel Hazo, and “Esprit De Corps “by Robert Jager.
The ensemble will conclude the concert with a special performance of “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin, in honor of the 100th anniversary of this world-famous 1924 composition. “The second half of the concert will be a very special feature for us,” remarked Gowen. “We’re thrilled to feature Dr. EunAe Lee on piano, who is a recent full-time member of our outstanding music faculty. And our performance will be similar in scope to the original Paul Whitman Band premiere, with just a fraction of our entire ensemble – about two dozen to be exact – accompanying Dr. Lee.”
